13311 Seminar

SoSe 23: Post/Colonial Migrations to Europe, 1900-1970s

Minu Haschemi Yekani

Additional information / Pre-requisites

Important to note: 1. The two seminars, "Post/Colonial Migrations to Europe, 1900-1970s" and "Migrations from the Global South to Europe, 1950s-2010s," have to be taken together. Ideally they form a module about migration histories. This means the seminar is co-taught together with Seminar 13315 Migrations from the Global South to Europe, 1950s-2010s. With this, we aim to have enough time for discussion and source work and that every participant should conclude the module with an exam (written M2 et al; oral M3). 2. The course will run from April 20 to June 8. On the following dates, it will include an additional morning session from 8:30 to 11:30am: May 11, May 25, June 1. close

Comments

"We are here because you were there!" This famous aphorism developed by A. Sivananda in the British context directly addressed the close connection between empire, postcolonial struggles, and migration to Europe. "The parity between the postcolonial and the migrant brings to light the crucial question of persisting empire in the age of globalization," writes Parvati Nair (2013). This seminar wants to gain a deeper understanding of these statements and introduces fundamental approaches to comprehending colonial/postcolonial migrations and their histories and contexts from 1900 to our present. We elaborate on the relationship between the history of empire, decolonization, and globalization through case studies dealing with questions of racism, citizenship, transnational networks, and migration experience. In this way, we will develop an understanding for the complexity of global, national, and local factors of migration. The issue of whose histories are visible and "count" as part of accounts of migration will be a recurring theme. One of the seminar's core questions is this: How can we research history applying a perspective of migration and write about actors who most often appear in the sources mediated by others? While case studies will be the seminar's core material, we will also integrate film, literature, architecture, as well as other sources if applicable. Students are expected to decide early on their own research topics and work on their individual projects during the term. Every student will present a case study. close
