Waterlogged sites often contain not only preserved wooden constructions, but also a broad spectrum of organic finds usually decayed in mineral soils. Thus, they offer very special insights to settlement and economic archaeology as well as to various bioarchaeological approaches. Therefore, rich, and comprehensive information on paleo diet, agricultural practices or animal husbandry has been gained from well-researched lakeside dwellings of the circum-alpine region. There, a dense record of dendrochronological dates provides a temporal resolution unmatched in any other part of prehistoric Europe and beyond. The Central European alpine foreland, however, is not the only region in Europe where prehistoric sites have been preserved by high water tables or other waterlogged conditions. Submarine sites of the Late Mesolithic are known from the Southern Baltic area, Neolithic bog sites occur in the British Isles, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Meanwhile, also Southern and Southeastern Europe has come into focus, where several lakeside settlements are known in Northeast Spain, Northern Greece, North Macedonia, and Albania which have been increasingly investigated during the last years. The lecture will provide an overview over the research potential of waterlogged sites, illustrated by examples from various parts of Europe. It will be complemented by several invited lectures (partly in German) on specific sites and issues of wetland archaeology. close
