Seminar
SoSe 23: (EK) Cities and Urban Development in the Arabian Peninsula
Stefan Maneval
Information for students
The seminar is accompanied by an Arabic reading course, which serves as an introduction into the work with primary sources.
Comments
Based on a selection of cities on the Arabian Peninsula, the course offers an overview of the history of the Gulf region from the 19th to the 21st century. Parallel developments will be traced, for example the entanglement of the cities in transnational trade networks in the late Ottoman period or the rapid growth and modernization after the discovery of oil, while also taking regional differences and local specificities into consideration. At the same time, the students will be introduced to recent approaches to urban research. The perspectives of different disciplines will be considered (e.g. history, anthropology, urban and architectural sociology) and key theoretical concepts (e.g. space, the port city paradigm, resistance, and agency) will be discussed, all based on concrete examples. close
