SoSe 23: Cityscape and Imagery in an Ancient Greek City: Case-Study Delos

The Cycladic island of Delos is often, rightly, called the Greek Pompeii. The island has a complex history: Panhellenic sanctuary of Apollo since the 7th century B.C.; Athenian rule (with interruptions) since 478 B.C.; independent Greek polis after 314 B.C., in which the continuously important sanctuary of Apollo benefited from donations of Hellenistic rulers; cosmopolitan commercial free port after 167/6 B.C.; successively abandoned since the early Roman Imperial period and never systematically resettled. Since the 1870s, the French have excavated and extensively published about a quarter of the city (23 ha).
The state of preservation and publication allow us to examine exemplarily manifold aspects of an ancient sanctuary and city from the Archaic period to the Roman Imperial period. This lecture course will give an overview of the rich archaeological remains of the island, with special attention to the spatial contexts of images and finds, as well as current approaches and methodological and theoretical discourses in research.
