SoSe 23: Deconstructing Eurocentrism: Decolonial Perspectives on Gender, Knowledge and Power
Friederike Beier
Comments
Decolonial scholars have examined concepts such as gender, sexuality, modernity or development for their Eurocentric assumptions as part of the "coloniality of power" (Quijano). They have made clear that Eurocentric knowledge dominates the world, which is inscribed in the concepts of gender, sexuality and modernity. In this seminar we will read decolonial scholars such as Maria Lugones, Aníbal Quijano or Walter Mignolo in order to deconstruct Eurocentric knowledge and discuss alternative ways of knowing. In the first half of the seminar we will read decolonial theories to deconstruct the concepts of power, knowledge, modernity, gender and sexuality. We will engage with theories and methods of a decolonial queer-feminism in the second half of the seminar. This theoretical and political perspective can help to overcome the white spots of a Eurocentric feminism and to connect theories and practices of anti-capitalist, queer and decolonial struggles. close
