Comments
Empirical social research establishes the link between the science of sociology and the real
societal world. The course aims at disclosing how the real societal development of a country has
an impact on which topics will be investigated by empirical social research and what kind of
methods will be chosen. Comparing the history of empirical social research in Germany from its
beginning during the foundation of the German Empire and the end of the 19. century in the USA
to the 1950s demonstrates that due to the different societal impacts there is a clear difference in
the development of methods and strategies of empirical social research in both countries. In the
seminar the most important studies conducted in both countries during the relevant period will be
discussed. close
