In our course we want to develop an understanding of philosophy and theory work as social practice, which positions itself selfconsciously in and to its socio-historical situation and seeks to change it positively. Together with our fellow students we want to initiate a reflection on how we can realize this claim.
First, we will discuss in the form of a reading seminar the topics 1. social situatedness of (theoretical) thinking, 2. practice-oriented theory work, and 3. intersections between academy and 'society'. Afterwards, students will write their own position papers in small groups, reflecting on their scholarly activity in light of social problem areas.
The course is designed for philosophy students in advanced bachelor's and master's programs, as well as those in other humanities and social science disciplines such as anthropology, education, gender studies, history, communication studies, political science, psychology, law, and sociology.
