WiSe 23/24: Beyond Liability: Research Ethics in Social Sciences

This course examines research ethics including but beyond university requirements, exploring how research ethics in social science can (and should) be considered comprehensively and at all stages of the research process. The course is split across three sections, corresponding to possible phases of the research process.
Section 1 will focus on ethical considerations when designing the research project. After a quick introduction of the different steps and methodologies of the research process, we will discuss why ethics are important. We will also reflect on the selection of research topics and questions, and present evolving concepts of reflexivity and positionality, “decolonizing” research and knowledge production, and feminist principles.
Section 2 deals with ethics in “fieldwork,” including practical elements and thinking around real life dilemmas. Sessions will include considerations on contexts, working with people, vulnerability, informed consent, data processing, and institutional review boards (IRBs). This will include a glimpse of FU’s own requirements when it comes to ethics in research.
Section 3 focuses on ethics during the analysis and writing stages of the research cycle. This will highlight discussions on research integrity and plagiarism, attribution and authorship, as well as inviting guest speakers to discuss their own experience navigating research ethics in real life contexts.
Throughout the course, students will be asked to think theoretically as well as critically examining research ethical approaches of selected empirical studies, as well as reflecting on how this applies to their own research or non-academic career plans.
