Memory plays a crucial role in shaping (post-conflict) societies and contemporary politics. Especially in times after periods of conflict and violence, engaging with the past is a highly political matter. Who is remembered, where, how and by whom? This course explores the multifaceted manifestations of collective memory, examining it through different scales, sites, and agents. We will examine the political and social contexts in which memories are constructed, maintained, and mobilized. Students will critically engage with theoretical and empirical debates around the politics of memory. Throughout this course, we will deal with academic and activist debates and literature, addressing various aspects of memory politics, knowledge production, activism and practice. The course is divided into thematic sessions, each focusing on specific topics within the politics of memory. We will delve into the complexities of collective memories and erasures, critical knowledge production and history, practices of commemoration and (counter)archiving as well as transitional justice and conflict transformation. Moreover, we will focus on how imperial memories shape contemporary domestic policies and international relations and how they are challenged by activism, political and educational practice and social movements. This course encourages students to critically engage with memory as a political and social construct, empowering them to analyze and participate in the ongoing discourse of memory politics in today's world. Students will gain a deep understanding of memory's role in shaping societies, confronting historical injustices, and shaping political narratives. close
