WiSe 23/24: Globalizing Critical Security Studies

Markus Hochmüller

Comments

In this seminar, students will be introduced to the field of critical security studies from a global perspective. The seminar will consist of four parts. In the first part, participants will be familiarized with the theoretical and conceptual core of the original schools of critical security studies. This will help them to develop an understanding of the main ideas of the field. In the second part, key methodological assumptions and methods applied in critical security studies will be introduced. This will provide participants with the necessary tools to critically analyze and evaluate real-world security problems and policies. In the third part, participants will engage with the blindspots of critical security studies by exploring scholarship from neighboring fields such as critical theory, gender studies, and postcolonial studies. Drawing upon case studies from Latin America to Africa, the seminar will conclude by exploring the global future(s) of critical security studies. This last section will focus on the question of how the field can incorporate intersectional and postcolonial analytical perspectives. Participants will discuss what it takes for critical security studies to become more global, decentred, and ultimately better prepared to engage with complex security challenges in the Global South. close
