WiSe 23/24: The Debt is Owed to Us. The Political Economy and Practice of Debt and Dispossession

Friederike Beier Jule Govrin

Comments

This seminar takes the slogan “The Debt is Owed to Us. Let those responsible for capital flight pay it” by feminist movements in Latin America as a starting point to investigate the economic, political, and social function of debt, household indebtment and austerity politics. In times of authoritarian neoliberalism, austerity measures, such as Structural Adjustment Programs by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other institutions have massively privatized care infrastructure in the Global South. These measures have massively exacerbated social and intersectional gender inequalities since the 1980s. The neoliberal debt management is increasingly under pressure, as feminist movements challenge the financialization of social reproduction due to austerity measures and other forms of debt policies such as microcredits. Our common analysis of the political economy of debt and dispossession in the seminar brings together materialist and feminist theoretical and social movement-oriented literature that analyses how economic violence enhances gendered violence. We will read authors, such as Veronica Gago, Lucia Cavallero, Silvia Federici, and Denise Ferreira da Silva to make sense of the political economy of debt and to investigate solidarity practices and body politics that challenge exploitation and extractivism fostered by debt economies. close
