WiSe 23/24: Banquet of words - food in Arabic literature

In this course, we will approach the topic of feasting, drinking, and other forms of indulgence, play, and picaresque in pre-modern Arabic literature while discussing the social embeddedness of these forms of sociality. What role did social eating and drinking have in Arab society of the time? Where, when, and why were celebrations held, and who participated? Who was invited and who was not invited and used tricks to get invited? What dishes and drinks were served? In which textual genres can relevant representations be found? Which literary characters can be found in the environment of the banquets? The focus will be on reading Arabic textual sources, but also the use of research literature to contextualize the texts. close
