WiSe 23/24: Introduction to Development Politics
Matthew Sabbi
Comments
Development is generally conceived as a set of interventions aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of people in the so-called Global South. However, critical accounts contend that development is, foremost, a political process that is constructed with inherent interests and distributional goals. Hence, efforts to improve the well-being of one group leave others worse off. In this introductory course, we will go beyond the traditional understanding of development as outcomes or progress in terms of economic growth. The course provides an overview of the evolution of concepts in development politics, current discourses and critique, recent trends and measures, research approaches, and practices in development interventions. close
