WiSe 23/24: China and the Global South

Additional information / Pre-requisites
After every second session, students will be required to fill in online quizzes, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for successful course participation. The quizzes are pass-fail and will be based on the previous two sessions’ readings and discussions.
The course will be examined via an essay (Hausarbeit) to be submitted by the end of the semester.

China’s geo-economic rise has come hand in hand with debates about its changing status in international relations. This course engages with one of the key areas of contention in China’s foreign policy – its shifting relationship with the Global South. It provides students with a broad contemporary political and theoretical framework in which more specific issues of China’s position in – or towards – the Global South can be embedded. The proseminar will allow students to critically reflect on key issues of identity, hierarchy and economic inequality in international politics, and to discuss their implications for recent geopolitical shifts. Readings will, amongst other topics, cover Chinese infrastructure provision and soft power in the Global South, Beijing’s engagement with developing country issues in the WTO, environmental governance and the international security architecture, as well as regional sessions addressing China’s links to Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and the post-Soviet space. close
