Since 1978, when China initiated economic reforms and opening-up policies, the Chinese economy has been one of the fastest-growing economies, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 10% for more than three decades. China is now the world's second-largest economy and the biggest exporter of commodities. China plays one of the most important roles in the global value chain and supply chain. On the other hand, China is also becoming one of the world's top energy importers, raw material consumers, and CO2 emitters.
What are the impacts of China’s rise on the world economy? How will other countries react to China’s economic emergence? How will the ongoing decoupling between China and the United States affect the Chinese economy and the world economy? How is China's rise changing the global economic landscape?
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge of what has happened to China and its impacts on global economy in recent decades. The course will offer in-depth discussions of Chinese macroeconomic development, industrial structure, trade pattern, economic imbalance, and their impact on the rest of the world economy, particularly in Asia, the Latin America, and Africa.
