WiSe 23/24: South Korea's roles in East Asia
Florian Pölking
Comments
South Korea has a track record of transforming itself from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the ten largest economic powers in about a generation. We will take this official narrative as a starting point to examine in this seminar the various roles South Korea has taken, aspired to or had to take in this regard in the context of East Asian regional relations from 1945 to the present. The focus will be on working with translated primary sources, scholarly secondary sources, practising scholarly methods and introducing theories related to the seminar topic. Where appropriate, material in the original language will also be introduced and used. In this way, we will broaden our view of South Korea's politics, economy and society and our understanding of the different directions and interpretations. close
