Kinship and family are social variables, not only but in traditionally living communities as well. Comprehending them only as biologically determined constructs would not correspond with their complexity. In cultural and social anthropology, the concept of ‘relatedness’ has been developed which encompasses multiple forms of relationships in social groups. But how can we use archaeological and textual evidence to infer social constructs such as family, kinship, and other such structures in the past? How can we describe the entanglements and interactions of different categories (age, gender, social status, ethnicity)? In this module (course and seminar) we will enter into a close exchange of classical and prehistoric archaeology in order to work out this complex field on the basis of different sources, including current methodological and theoretical approaches. Material culture will be discussed, especially from the area of graves, but also from settlements, ritual sites and sanctuaries. The possibilities of archaeological evidence as well as those of anthropological and archaeobiological analyses will be discussed.
