WiSe 23/24: Interdisziplinarity and Area Studies

Interdisciiplinary research constitutes the core of area studies (including Eastern European studies); yet what exactly is interdisciplinarity, and how does it function? How difficult it is to cross boundaries across individual scholarly fields; which challenges emerge for researchers,and how relevant is ultimately the interdisciplinary research for science and for practical work? The goal of the seminar is to discuss these topics. We start by debating several empirical cases of interdisciplinarity in social sciences in order to understand their advantages and pitalls. We then proceed by looking at the history of Eastern European studies (especially Russian studies), trying to understand how the field resolved the problem of interdisciplinary perspectives and how it affected its development.>br>
In order to pass the class, the students are expected to read the assigned papers (1 to 3 per week) and submit three questions to the reading on the weekly basis. close
