WiSe 23/24: The Great Depression in the United States

This seminar will explore different dimensions of the Great Depression, the most significant economic downturn in U.S. history. The seminar will track the evolution of the U.S. economy during the Great Depression and explore the causes and consequences (economic and otherwise) of this macroeconomic disaster. Topics covered include, among others, the Roaring Twenties, the stock market boom and crash, the bank failures, mass unemployment and poverty, the economic situation of women and minorities, the policies of the Federal Reserve, the New Deal, and the lasting legacy of the Great Depression. All students are required to attend at least 75 percent of the classes and hold a presentation (20-25 minutes). To obtain a grade for this course, students will have to submit a seminar paper (approx. 10 pages/4000-5000 words). close
