WiSe 23/24: Finding Home and Moving On: Intersectional and Queer Theories of Home and Migration

People are constantly on the move: they pass through different stages of their lives, they relocate to other places, and they conceptualize and reconceptualize their sense of self. Especially queer people's search for identity and belonging is contingent on particular notions of home and community. These notions often intersect with other identity markers, including race, class, and especially gender. In this course, we seek to understand the different ways in which to understand migrations and making home from a critical perspective and investigate mechanisms for discerning these in a larger, intersectional context. What gendered narratives are attached to home and movement and how do they change throughout one's lifecourse? What is the emancipatory potential of the capability to move and stay? What is the sociological meaning of space, place, and time in this context? Students will address these questions by critically and intersectionally analyzing theories of migration, home, and space. We will sociologically synthesize and scrutinize these theories and apply them to historical and contemporary sociological contexts and develop their own approaches for working on and with critical gender and queer theories. close
