Das antike Ägypten unter griechisch-römischer Herrschaft, d. h. von ca. 330 v. Chr. bis in das 3. Jh. n. Chr., zeichnet sich in vielen Lebensbereichen durch einen tiefgreifenden Wandel aus, der nicht zuletzt auch durch intensivierte kulturelle Kontakte bedingt ist. Einer der Bereiche, wo diese Interaktion zwischen den kulturellen Traditionen am deutlichsten zutage tritt, ist der Sepulkralbereich. Hier sind auf allen Ebenen (der Grabarchitektur, der Beigaben, der Körperbehandlung, der Rituale) Veränderungen spürbar, die jedoch in Abhängigkeit zu chronologischen und geographischen Faktoren stehen. So verwundert es nicht, wenn sich Ägypten in Hellenismus und Kaiserzeit durch eine starke Diversität im Umgang mit dem Tod auszeichnet, die neben verschiedenen Arten der Körperbehandlung (Mumifizierung vs. Verbrennung) auch zahlreiche Optionen für die Bestattung dieser Körper umfasst (versiegelte unterirdische Grabkammern vs. zugängliche oberirdische Hausgräber; Särge vs. Mumienbetten; Mumienmasken vs. Mumienportraits etc.). Diese variierenden Bestattungsoptionen in Relation zu den sozialhistorischen Rahmenbedingungen des ptolemäischen bis kaiserzeitlichen Ägypten zu bringen, wird daher das übergreifende Ziel des Seminars sein. close
