WiSe 23/24: (VS) VM: "Let's get digital: Digitalization in Japan"

The Covid pandemic has digitalized most people’s lives in unprecedented ways and has also triggered debates about and measures to promote digitalization in Japan. While early policies to digitalize Japan date back to the first decade of the 21th century, the Japanese government just recently adopted a new digitalization vision and strategy in 2022, which aims to build a new digital infrastructure, develop and secure human resources with digital skills and to develop Japan’s rural areas through digitalization. Based on these recent policies and government efforts, we will discuss how the digitalization of Japanese society and economy is being promoted and supported by various actors, but also how digital practices have changed the way people live and work inside and outside Japan. We will discuss new forms of work such as remote work, digital nomadism and workation and digital business practices such as e-commerce and look at how people in Japan connect digitally via social media and other digital means. By linking top-down government approaches with the everyday experiences of Japanese people, we will discuss how Japanese society might (has) change(d), address hopes and potential, but also ethical issues and the limits of digitalization in Japan. This course is open to students of the Global East Asia MA program. Japanese language proficiency is not required. close
