WiSe 23/24: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Sounding the Nation: Experimental Radio and Podcasting in Contemporary British Culture

This module considers experimental UK radio and podcasting as a sonic snapshot of contemporary Britain. Characterised by montage, the blending of music, sound effects, and the interspersal and overlay of often multiple poetic voices, the concept of experimental audio will be defined with attention to historical developments in the production, consumption and distribution of sound in relation to social change. Beginning with the radical ‘Radio Ballads’ of the 1960s, via the soundsystem cultures of 1990s Jungle pirate radio, up to the digital wave-form innovations of present-day podcasting, we will trace the evolution of experimental broadcasting through the various lenses of postcolonial, anti-capitalist, feminist, ecological and queer theory and politics. Key to this module’s central notion of ‘Sounding the Nation’, we will interrogate the seismic role and influence of BBC Radio in broadcasting a traditional sense of British nationhood in both domestic and imperial terms. Subsequently, exploring the new media ecology shaped by independent podcast feeds and emerging channels of internet radio, we will ultimately evaluate the extent to which these aspects of the digital revolution (including the advent of BBC Sounds) have enabled a progressive diversification of audio content that reflects the lived reality of 2020s Britain. close
