WiSe 23/24: PS-History of English II: Language Contact in the History of English
Antje Wilton-Franklin
Comments
In this seminar, we will explore the concept of language contact and apply it to the history of English. As a global language, English has come into contact with many languages around the world which left their traces in the linguistic subsystems of English in various ways. Furthermore, language contact is closely connected to issues of language change, variation and standard language ideologies, which are made socially and politically relevant in public discourse both in the past and in the present. We will also address methodological questions such as how language contact in the past, both recent and deep, can be investigated. Students are invited to conduct and present their own small research project to demonstrate active participation in the course. close
