This seminar is interested in how early modern texts engage with the question of how things came about, that is, with etiology, with the history of origins. Following a few introductory sessions regarding theories of origins and temporality, we will try to answer the above question by way of reading several tragedies by William Shakespeare, which engage with questions of origins in very different ways, namely, Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear. close
