To readers who wish to think within clearly circumscribed historical and generic categories, the work of John Milton has proven slippery. The body of his writing from the early poetry to the later epics moves between such stereotypes as late Renaissance, Baroque and Mannerist. Though centred on the great epic Paradise Lost, this lecture will also consider Milton’s lyrical poetry as well as selected passages of his prose. Those wishing to hear this lecture are strongly advised to purchase a critical edition of Paradise Lost (e.g. Alastair Fowler (ed.), Longman), or John Milton: The Complete Poems (John Leonard (ed.), Penguin).
