ENGLISH BELOW - It is possible to participate in this course as an English speaker Telegram wurde in den Letzten Jahren zu einem der wichtigsten Mobilisierungs- und Kommunikationstools der Neuen Rechten. Telegram ist attraktiv für extremistische Akteure, weil der Messengerdienst sich bislang weitestgehend staatlicher Kontrolle entzieht und somit auch nach Deplattforming auf anderen Diensten noch als Rückzugsort genutzt werden kann. Telegram gilt als resilient und sicher. Ein großer Teil der Kommunikation (neu-)rechter Akteure findet allerdings öffentlich einsehbar statt - somit wurden Chatdaten von Telegram zu einer wichtigen Ressource für Forschende, die sich mit rechten Bewegungen befassen. Das gilt umso mehr, da andere Plattformen den Zugang zu Daten spürbar einschränken (danke Elon). Wir befassen uns in diesem Kurs mit der Erhebung und Analyse von Telegramdaten. Programmierkenntnisse (Python oder R) sind nicht erforderlich (!), schaden aber selbstverständlich auch nicht. Der Kurs richtet sich ausdrücklich nicht nur an Studierende, die sich für quantitative und digitale Methoden begeistern, sondern an Alle (ein substantieller Teil der Datenerhebung und Analyse erfordert qualitatives Denken). Sie lernen: Inhaltlich: Grundzüge des rechtsextremen Diskurses Methodisch: Grundlagen der Erhebung von Telegramdaten und der Analyse von Telegramdaten mit aktuellen Methoden aus dem Bereich der Computational Social Science (soziale Netzwerkanalyse ODER Structural Topic Modelling) Die Kursleistung besteht aus einer (Gruppen-) Hausarbeit entsprechend der Modulanforderungen (sofern Sie Ihre Hausarbeit in diesem Kurs einreichen) sowie einer mündlichen Ergebnispräsentation in der Gruppe (verpflichtend für alle). Bitte beachten Sie, dass wir den Kurs aus Gründen der Inklusivität in englischer Sprache abhalten werden, sollten sich ausländische Studierende ohne Deutschkenntnisse einschreiben. Der Kurs ist gekoppelt mit dem Seminar 28627 „Rechtsextremismus im Internet: Plattformen, Akteur:innen und Mobilisierungsstrategien“ (Baoning Gong), der in Forschungsfelder einführt, die Rechtsextremismus im Internet für die Kommunikationswissenschaft eröffnet. In diesem Seminar lernen die Studierenden, die Kernprobleme im Zusammenhang mit der extremen Rechten auf digitalen Plattformen, die wichtigsten Konzepte und Methoden im Forschungsfeld und den aktuellen Stand der Forschung zu verstehen. Studierende, die diesen Kurs wählen, belegen automatisch auch den Kurs Rechtsextremismus im Internet: Plattformen, Akteur:innen und Mobilisierungsstrategien. ENGL.: In recent years, Telegram has become one of the most important mobilisation and communication tools of the New Far-Right. Telegram is attractive for extremist actors because the messenger service has so far largely escaped state control and can thus still be used as a place of retreat even after deplatforming on other services. Telegram is considered resilient and secure. However, a large part of the communication of (far-)right actors takes place in public chatgroups - thus, chat data from Telegram has become an important resource for researchers dealing with right-wing movements. This is all the more true as other platforms noticeably restrict access to data for researchers (thanks, Elon). In this course, we will collect and analyse Telegram data. Programming skills (Python or R) are not required (!), but of course do not hurt. The course is explicitly not only for students who are enthusiastic about quantitative and digital methods, but for everyone (a substantial part of the data collection and analysis requires qualitative thinking). You will learn: Content: Basic features of right-wing extremist discourse. Methodological: Basics of collecting telegram data and analysing telegram data with current methods from computational social science (social network analysis OR structural topic modelling). The course assignment consists of a (group) term paper according to the module requirements (if you submit your term paper in this course) and an oral presentation of results in the group (obligatory for all). The course is coupled with the seminar 28627 "Researching the far-right on the Internet: Platforms, Actor:s and Mobilization Strategies" (Baoning Gong), which introduces research fields that right-wing extremism on the Internet opens up for communication studies. In this seminar, students will learn to understand the core issues related to the far-right on digital platforms, the main concepts and methods in the research field, and the current state of research. Students who choose this course automatically also take the course “Researching the far-right on the Internet: Platforms, Actors, and Mobilization Strategies”. close
