Maciej Klimiuk

Information for students

Since the MA Interdisciplinary Studies of the Middle East students can take the HS, the course is taught in German/English.

Comments

The seminar provides an overview of the most important issues in the Arabic dialectology, including discussion of selected dialects. It should be noted that the format of the course is strictly dependent on the number of participants, who may propose other dialects to be discussed as necessary. The first part of the course consists of a brief introduction, during which the linguistic situation of the Arabic world will be outlined, and we will then move on to discuss the types of classification of Arabic dialects. We will also become familiar with the characteristic terminology. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss some of the trends occurring in Arabic dialectology, especially selected methods of dialectological research, however the emphasis will be on field research and its characteristics. In the second, longer part of the course, we will move on to discuss and present individual Arabic dialects and the Maltese language, including its dialects, within five dialectal groups: Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, Syria/Palestine/Lebanon, Egypt/Sudan and North Africa/Malta. During the presentation of the dialects, we will cover their main features, grammatical characteristic vocabulary and use recordings and texts as they become available. The individual dialects will be suggested to the participants during the initial class. close
