WiSe 23/24: S-Structure of English: Corpus-Bases Approaches to Semantics

This seminar will introduce students to the use of corpus linguistics in the study of the semantics of words and phrases. We will begin by revisiting the logic of corpus-linguistic research designs as well some basic techniques of corpus linguistics, such as corpora, concordances, and collocations. We will then explore how corpus linguistics can be used to investigate a wide range of semantic phenomena, including polysemy, lexical relations (such as antonymy and synonymy), metaphor, metonymy and connotation. By the end of the seminar, students will be able to apply corpus linguistic methods to a wide variety of semantic phenomena in English (students from the MA Sprachwissenschaft may also choose other languages to investigate). close
