WiSe 23/24: Arab Media in the context of national politics, regional change and global developments

In this seminar students will comparatively analyze media systems in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. The often contradicting developments of modernization and liberalization on the one hand and neo-authoritarian repression and oligarchization on the other hand make these media systems so interesting and worthwhile to be explored. This seminar will make students familiar with the structures, actors and mechanisms that shape these media systems, employing a national, regional and global perspective.
We will tackle a variety of topics in the context of media system comparison, including media policy, ownership structures, digital activism and repression, local media, gender, the role of entertainment media and journalism education.
Besides the typical reading of scholarly texts, a course-specific eLearning platform (www.areacore.org/ims) will be a main guide for students. Moreover, students in Berlin will benefit from virtual lectures from colleagues from Arab partner universities.
In addition to the regular course work, students will be allowed to take part in a WinterSchool that includes cooperation with students from various Arab countries to work on intercultural video projects exploring Arab media in more depth and that can substitute the term paper. More information on this great opportunity will be given in the first session. close
