WiSe 23/24: US Drama: History and Analysis

This literary studies course on US-American dramatic texts is designed as a combined lecture and seminar format to cover three key dimensions: It offers a historical survey of US-American dramatic literary tradition, a discussion of theories of the genre and media specific practices, and a space to hone your skills for formal dramatic analysis and interpretation.
We will discuss aesthetic genre traditions and how US-American drama evolves as a hybrid of 19th century precedents, drawing on but also pushing against practices of commercial stage productions as well as on transatlantic lines of early modernist drama. We will discuss how American literary productions creatively engages with influences such as Strindberg, Chekhov, Ibsen, and how Realist and Naturalist tendencies as well as Expressionist and Epic Theater impact its early forms and content. The class covers canonical theory and texts from Glaspell to Miller, Williams, and contemporary plays and engages with transmedial processes of exchange between stage and screen. Our readings aim to explore African American, feminist, queer, and postcolonial playwrighting and to make room for student choices and interests.
