The course will be concerned with a genre that is rarely addressed in Literary Studies: literary reviews. We will look at the history of reviewing from the days of 18th-century literary magazines until contemporary online book reviews, assess various approaches to literary reviewing, and differentiate between literary criticism and literary reviews. Students will also be asked to practice their own skills in writing reviews on the Booker Prize winners of the last few years, i.e. the novels that are on the reading list of course 17400. Students may therefore wish to attend both parts of the module.
Students are expected to attend regularly and to participate in classroom activities (e.g. give short presentations and write reviews).
