WiSe 23/24: US-Russia Relations

Keith Prushankin

Comments

Russia has been the preeminent threat in the US national security discourse for over a century. This course examines why this is the case, and how US perception of Russia has evolved, changed, and adapted throughout different historical eras. Beginning with the revolutionary Congress’s fears over a Tsarist invasion to suppress the nascent American Republic, American policymakers have framed Russia as a threat and opportunity, a backward nation deserving pity or scorn, and a powerful country capable of contesting and defeating US interests. Throughout this course, we will examine how the US national security community discursively constructed Russia and how these ideas about Russia influenced policy. We will look at a selection of primary and secondary literature covering four distinct periods of US-Russia relations: pre-1917, the USSR period, the post-Cold War period, and the post-2014 era of geopolitical competition. close
