WiSe 23/24: Narratives of Race, Place, Anthropocene (Englisch)

New Materialism, a conglomerate of theories and approaches concerned with the entanglements of historically loaded concepts such as humanity, technology, and nature have been described as a “turn to matter”. But how are both matter and our turn towards it accessed, felt, and told? What narratives about science, society, the environment, and the future emerge in the wake of the Anthropocene? Which stories about places and people uncover historical injustices and which ones perpetuate colonial power structures?
This seminar investigates how narratives give shape not only to the ways in which we conceptualise ourselves, others, and our shared or contested environments, but also to our theoretical and critical assessments of these concepts. In order to do so, we will look at the Anthropocene and narratives of race and place through various lenses developed by scholars of Black and Indigenous Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Environmental Humanities, and Citizen Science. The course is interdisciplinary, combing philosophy with perspectives from comparative literature, environmental humanities and cultural studies. We plan to read texts by Bedour Alagraa, Max Liboiron, Katherine McKittrick, Kathryn Yusoff, among others.
Reading and discussion will be in English, term papers are welcome in both English and German.
