This course is an introduction to key issues in the feminist philosophical tradition. Feminists attempt to describe women's oppression, to explain its causes and consequences, and to prescribe strategies for women's liberation. The guiding concern of this course will be to understand what philosophy has to offer to feminism and how feminist concerns gain at being explored within traditional philosophical inquiry.
We will focus on the following types of questions: why and how can sex and gender constitute a basis for oppression? Are traditional conceptions of justice fair to women? Is “woman” a philosophical concept? Are there women? Is heterosexuality constitutive of womanhood? How do gender and other categories of identity—e.g., race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability status, age —intersect? How does gender oppression harm women as knowers? Could there be a distinctively feminist ethics? Readings will consist primarily of mixture of contemporary work and landmark texts from the past century. You will be expected to read around 30-40 dense pages per week.
