Comments
The seminar looks at certain strands of Islamic(ate) cultural history through the lens of athletic activities and the more modern concepts of sports and leisure. As such, it is not primarily addressed to students who are interested specifically in sports, but those who want to understand certain societal developments by exploring more novel axes of interpretation. There is a considerable overlap with military history, normative frameworks of Islamic jurisprudence, royal and rural festivities, ritual heritage, popular culture, and consumer culture. Different types of historical and modern sports will be tackled like hunting, dance, martial arts, soccer, and swimming.
