Are falafel Israeli or Palestinian? Can food bring about peace? And what does kebab have to do with German national pride? In this cultural studies seminar as an introduction to the study of the history and culture of the so-called Middle East, we examine the intriguing relationships between food, identity and nation - with a special focus on the "Orient" and the food worlds of Berlin. Using scholarly and literary texts as well as our own restaurant visits to Berlin, we discuss theories of culinary nationalism, gastrodiplomacy, and transculturality. We will critically examine how identities are created and excluded through food. The focus will include the political instrumentalization of dishes such as hummus or couscous, the influence of colonialism on food cultures, and examples of culinary peacebuilding. Topics such as colonialism, migration, gender and religion will also be analyzed from multiple perspectives.
