WiSe 23/24: Reading Ottoman Sources

This course will introduce students to a wide range of published and archival sources in Ottoman Turkish from the long nineteenth century. These will include newspaper and journal articles, sections of literary and academic works, imperial decrees, laws and regulations as well as correspondence between the Sublime Porte and various ministries and governorates. In addition to such sources, we will examine other types of archival sources and records such as petitions, interrogation reports and registers of modern imperial courts. By the end of the course, the students will have acquired an appreciation of the vast range of literary, archival and scientific sources in Ottoman Turkish from the late imperial period, which will allow them to pursue independent research utilizing them. close
