This seminar explores an array of 16th- to 19th-century Chinese and Japanese artists who are recognized, celebrated and/or rebuked for certain unorthodox, individualistic, or idiosyncratic attributes in their work and, in particular cases, their personality and mentation. We discuss newly emerged styles and subject matters in various painting genres, investigating the personal motivations as well as the social, political, and cultural conditions that framed and propelled their development. The examination of the individual cases from Ming-Qing China and Edo Japan, and their changing scholarly treatment over time, paves the way for a comparative approach to connoisseurial and art historical constructs. Reflecting on these constructs eventually helps in achieving a better-differentiated understanding of the conceptualization of eccentricity as aesthetic and critical criteria in early modern East Asian art. close
