Pop stars, performance artists, streakers, freak shows, tableaux vivants, beauty pageants, body building, anatomy theaters, human zoos — this is a class that investigates the display of bodies as performance practice and critically examines questions of power, visibility, and consent. The approach of this performance analysis course also focusses on embodied expression — the movements and gestures of actors, the techniques of dance, modes of dressing and adorning the corporeal, and ways that the body, by being shown, might be brought into difficult and/or intimate relations. It also explores the display of the body as a zone of slippage between the popular and artistic spheres, blurring the edges of performance-as-art. A Mix of German and English-language readings are drawn from biopolitical theory and bioethics, disability studies, queer studies, Black and Indigenous studies, media studies, performance studies and medical history. Class includes weekly screenings of films, documentaries, and documented performances. close
