Division and Diversity: Border Politics on the Korean Peninsula

This course critically examines the multifaceted dimensions of borders, both territorial and sociocultural, with a specific focus on the Korean Peninsula. Participants will explore three key areas: (a) the concept of border and border politics, (b) the imagined and contested nature of the nation as a border, particularly in the aftermath of the division of the two Koreas, and (c) the impact of post-Cold War globalization and migration transitions on Korea’s national identity, border control and associated struggles.
Tailored for the summer school of 2024, the course offers an immersive learning experience that extends beyond the classroom. A field trip to Korea in August will provide participants with firsthand exposure to the complexities of border dynamics. Attendance in this course is mandatory for all summer school participants.
