Advanced seminar
Hyper-Commodified Cities and Urban Social Movements
Mathilde Gustavussen
Comments
After decades of neoliberal governance, cities have become thoroughly
commodified, from urban space and public services to public
infrastructure. In this seminar we will interrogate processes of
commodification, privatization, gentrification, and financialization, how
they intersect in US cities, and the consequences for urban citizens. We
will also explore how urban social movements have contested such
processes, focusing on their tactics and strategies, as well as the
potential for radically altering what some scholars have called the
“hypercommodification of urban life.” close
