SoSe 24: Kan ya ma kan: Introduction to the Arabic Folktale of oral tradition
Montserrat Rabadan Carrascosa
Comments
When we hear the expression "Arabic Folktale" we inevitably think of the famous work of the Thousand and One Nights. But the Arabic storytelling tradition is not limited to this work, the stories have continued to live in the chain of oral transmission and have come to this day in their multiple geographical and dialectal manifestations.
This course consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part there will be readings of different texts on Methodology that will be presented and discussed in class. In the practical part, students will read, translate and analyze in small groups several Arabic folktales. The aim of the course is for students to have an overview of how traditional oral literature and more specifically folktales work.
