SoSe 24: Documentary Sound

This seminar familiarizes students with the artistic practice of documentary sound as it evolved throughout the 20th century until today in radiophonic art, (electroacoustic) music and other fields of sound creation (i.e. film sound design, ethnography). While this seminar was conceived from a musicological angle, interested in the poetics, technics, aesthetics and cultural-historical contexts of the artistic use of documentary sound, exploring this practice inevitably leads us into interdisciplinary realms, crossing over into questions related to sensory ethnography, sound studies, sonic epistemology and media studies. We will approach the topic from a theoretical angle (what is documentary? how can sound document the real? how does it relate to music?), entwining it with a (necessarily partial) historical overview of the practice and exploring methodologies to approach and analyze works using documentary sounds. During listening sessions we will take the time to listen jointly in a relaxed atmosphere to pieces that we will discuss and analyze in class. During workshops we will be able to enter in conversation with artists, critics and curators at home in the border between radio and sonic art, research and documentary. close
