SoSe 24: Over land and over water: means and routes of transport in prehistory
Elke Kaiser
Comments
In the Studies of the Ancient World the exchange, contacts and interactions between individuals or communities in the past are often subject of discussion. However, one of the main element of communication, transport itself builds rarely the focus of interest. Yet numerous means of transport such as carts, boats, horses, cattle etc. are known from archaeological contexts and offer insights into technical knowledge and economic conditions. Routes are also investigated, including the archaeological remains of built routes as well as the transfer of raw materials and semi-finished products. In this course, we will read selected literature to build the theoretical foundations of the topic and case studies will be discussed in presentations. The seminar will be accompanied by lectures and at least one joint visit to a museum is planned. close
