From hunting station to protest camp - the archaeology of temporary settlements

Henny Piezonka, Elke Kaiser

Comments

Temporary settlements have been part of human lifeways from the dawn of humanity’s existence and continue to exist today in nomadic settings and even in the industrial city-dwelling cultural sphere. As an archaeological category, they are highly important as they attest to central aspects of settlement and mobility patterns as well as to social structures of the communities. However, their recognition and investigation pose particular problems due to the, often ephemeral character of the archaeological remains, connected to light dwellings and short time span of usage. In this course, we discuss a broad range of examples across time and space, from Stone Age hunting stations, to settlements of pastoral nomads, to the hidden camps of Early Modern maroons (excaped slaves), to contemporary examples such as camps of homeless people, protest camps, and festival sites. We will also look at ethnoarchaeological research and its potential to illuminate aspects of the archaeologically invisible. close
