SoSe 24: Getting ready for studying abroad in Japan
Nakako Hattori-Ishimaru
Comments
The introductory course "Vorbereitung für den Japanaufenthalt" is designed primarily for students who will soon be leaving for a possible long-term educational stay, such as an exchange program. The focus of the course is twofold. First, it aims to develop students' critical ability to reflect more deeply on what they would encounter. It is crucial not to let what we perceive collide unprocessed, but to analyze each observation, each astonishment with the help of existing literature, discussion, and critical reflection. Attributing everything to a peculiarity of Japan can never be a satisfactory answer. Exposing oneself to complex, ambiguous, and uncertain situations while searching for commonalities would enhance one's ability as a Japanologist. Second, practical tips should make it easier for you to start living in Japan. What is life like at a Japanese university? How are the Japanese foods prepared and how the ingredients and techniques come from? How can I learn cultural communication codes more easily? What job search or travel tips can I use during my stay in Japan? All these questions and many more will be discussed during the semester and should allay any worries and fears you may have before embarking on an exchange program. close
