This course will give theoretical insights and practical experience into the extraction and productional methods of plant fibres. The oldest textiles (ropes, nets, clothes) were made of grasses and bast from trees, shrubs and nettles.
We will visit the exhibition „All hands on: Flechten“ in the Ethnographical Museum in Dahlem and get an introduction into the subject by the organizers of this course. Students will also be given the possibility to give a presentation. During a 2-days excursion to Lübeck to the Geschichtserlebnis Roter Hahn Manfred Pfeifer will show us how to extract fibres from nettle plants. We will all learn how to drill a cord with nettle and tree bast fibres. These practical exercises will be continued in the Museumsdorf Düppel in Dahlem with nettle and hemp plants. In addition, we will visit the Botanical Institute of the FU (also in Dahlem) where we will learn about microscopical methods in plant fibre determination.
