SoSe 24: Agency and Causation (Englisch)
Barbara Vetter
Comments
When we act, we cause things to happen. Some philosophers have argued that intentional actions are in fact nothing more than a special case of
causation: behaviour caused by our intentions or similar mental states. On the other hand, it is hard to understand what causation is without resorting to our understanding of actions. Others philosophers have argued that indeed causation is to be understood in terms of human agency. Whether we understand an aspect of human life (action) in terms of the natural order
(causation) or the other way around, action and causation are closely related. In this seminar we will engage with current debates about the relation between action and causation, including causal and non-causal theories of action and agency-based or manipulability-based theories of causation.
