The seminar focuses on the use of natural resources in the early modern period. Water, wood, raw materials extracted in mining, crops and "farm animals" as well as free-living animals (such as fish, birds and hunting game) form the objects of inquiry. By studying sources and research literature (in German and English), we approach early modern concepts of nature, the rights and possibilities of its use, and knowledge about natural resources. Spatially, territories in Europe ( with emphasis on Prussia, Austria, England and France) and in some colonies in America will be treated. The structure of the seminar is based on individual raw materials and how they encountered humans with respect to their self-reliance and usability. The dependencies of early modern societies on natural resources, as shown for example by famines, will be related to forms of planned and technically induced increase in yield and to strategies of exploitation of natural resource deposits. As an introductory seminar, basic methods of historical work will be practiced on the basis of the thematic focus. The focus is on the joint learning of the seminar group and on acquiring the most important forms of work for the study of the early modern period. close
